The conference will include three panels that explore the importance of classical antiquity in France from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment. The panels will focus in particular on the history of idea, on the reception of classical literary forms, and on the interplay between ancient and modern media. The ten speakers from American and British universities will present papers that examine a variety of topics touching on the reception of classical antiquity, such as the Stoic concept of indifferent matters (adiaphora) in 16th-centuntury France, the collection of ancient medals and the role of the Cabinet des Médailles in Versailles, and the importance of Anacreon for women writers in the late 17th century. We hope the conference will be the occasion for a lively discussion of the manifold ways that classical antiquity formed and was formed by writers and thinkers of the 16th through 18th centuries in France. Such issues might lead us to consider not only how early modern France shaped itself in response to classical antiquity, but also how later periods, including the 21st-century, have shaped themselves in response to the ideas, literary forms, and media of the past.
